Sony's latest firmware v3.0 is full of big updates to the F5, F55 and AXS-R5 RAW recorder. Andy recently did a blog on some of the new features, and while updating the firmware on the cameras is a pretty straightforward process, the R5 is a bit trickier. In my video above, I will take you through a step-by-step explanation of how to update the R5 using a Mac. (Please note: If you are running Windows, the process is identical except that you must format the AXSM media card in the camera instead of in the CR1 reader.) To download firmware v3.0 for the AXS-R5 and to view the full list of updates,...

Your dreams of a super-fast 4K workflow have just gotten a little more real. At CES, LaCie debuted their new Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2, which is one of the few Thunderbolt 2-enabled drives currently on the market. We've discussed many of the advantages of shooting Log C on the ALEXA before, but often one of the biggest roadblocks is the preconceived notion of an overly complex workflow. While this can be true if you need to grade the majority of your footage, often times (especially if you nail your exposure), a simple translation is all that is necessary. If you plan on delivering Rec. 709 content or simply prefer to edit in a 709 environment, sometimes a quick look is all you need. The latest update to Final Cut Pro X adds an easy way to view, edit, and output Log footage as a corrected 709 image, potentially...

Last week I visited the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which features millions of electronic gadgets that would make any geek smile. I went with purpose though, touring the massive halls looking for new gear and technology that might have an impact on filmmakers. It was tough sifting through all the cellphone accessories and headphone booths, but I think I found some key trends in the mix.
4K & Ultra HD Televisions
This might seem like an obvious one, but the sheer amount of 4K/Ultra HD televisions at the show was very impressive. Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Polaroid, Toshiba, and many...
